Everyone Talks to Everyone

Great Britain - London

I’ve been living in London for nearly 10 years. A city not known for its friendliness, no speaking to anyone you don’t know, no eye contact. If you do, you’re classed a weirdo. Two memories strike me from when I’ve come home; standing in a queue at Lidl and sitting at Knock airport.

On one occasion when I came home, I was standing in the queue in Lidl to pay holding a bunch of flowers when I heard a man talking. I turned around and realised he was talking to me about my flowers. It hit me, you’re home! I could only smile. Everyone talks to everyone. I loved it.

The second, and most recent was I flew home via Knock airport. I was sitting in arrivals waiting for my son to pick me up when an older gentleman who was also sitting and started talking to me. Ocean FM were also in arrivals chatting to people who were arriving that day. I asked him if he was waiting for family. He told me, no. He was at the airport listening to the broadcast and just having wee chats with people as they waited, something he says he did often. He definitely knew the flight schedule! This would only happen in Ireland and it warms my heart.
