In the ancient Celtic calendar, the date of Saint Brigid’s Day, February 1st, marked the first day of spring, and the festival of Imbolc. Saint Brigid symbolises fertility, creativity, poetry and renewal. Here in Lisbon, a relic of St. Brigid has been carefully held at the Igreja de Sao Joao Baptista do Lumiar over several centuries and the saint was celebrated every year, with farm animals being blessed in the square in front of the church.
More recently, St Brigid’s Day has become an annual opportunity for Irish communities and friends of Ireland around the world to honour the talent, creativity and leadership of women. We hope that you can join us for what is sure to be a very special occasion. The concert will be preceded by a guided tour to the relic of Saint Brigid of Kildare located in St. John the Baptist Church, next to the museum, from 11 AM onwards.
