Meath County Council Arts Office presents “Hoor”, a ‘text and image’ project that combines poetry with visual art, bringing together the work of two award-winning Irish artists: Jim McElroy and Ann Kiernan. Adapting the poignant poem ‘Hoor’ by Meath Cultural Services’ Francis Ledwidge Poetry Award winner (2020); Jim McElroy , this video presentation adds a visual dimension in the form of interpretative illustration provided by Ann Kiernan; winner of the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year Award 2020.
Originally for Kilmainham, Kells, Ann Kiernan moved to Berlin in 2015 to work-full time in illustration. As Ann herself is part of the global diaspora this initiative intends to reach, it is thought she will bring a special perspective and is therefore being identified as a suitable artist for this pairing.
Belfast poet Jim has been in receipt of several awards for his writing since first being published in 2018. His beautiful poem ‘Hoor’ is a moving, vivid description of his father: the typical Irish farmer, and the idiosyncrasies that formed this, and many an Irish man, of a certain vintage and standing.
